DIY Sore Muscle & Joint Cream

As always, life has been crazy! I’ve been teaching more and more workout classes as the studio gets more and more business, work has been quite exciting, and I’m getting ready to go on vacation! But in order to get through all of this crazy, I have to take care of my body. I must say, I’ve been amazed at what pure essential oils have done for me, and this is yet another example.

Since I’m a fitness instructor, I can’t be “too sore” to workout. I have to be there for my clients who show up ready to move and groove for an hour. Thankfully, I have concocted a cream that helps relax my muscles and joints so that they can recover quicker! I mentioned this in my previous post about avoiding joint pain, and as promised, I’m here to go more in depth!

Backstory- one morning I woke up with this TERRIBLE pain in my neck. I definitely slept wrong and tweaked a nerve, because I could not move my head or shoulders at all, and could barely lift my arms. I took some ibuprofen, but it didn’t help at all. My boyfriend had to clothe me and went to the store to pick up some Tiger Balm, which I remember my dance friends used to use when they were sore/injured/etc. As soon as the balm touched my skin, rather than feeling pain relief, it felt searing pain. It felt like my skin was on fire. I jumped in the shower and cried as I attempted to wash it off. When I finally went to the doctor, she couldn’t prescribe any muscle relaxers because I was allergic to them (go figure), but she did recommend another cream. Unfortunately, this cream had the same effect. They contained synthetic ingredients and chemicals that my body revolted against. From that moment on, I thought I just couldn’t handle anything with menthol.

Fast forward to now- I’ve mixed my own cream with a couple 100% therapeutic grade essential oils: wintergreen, peppermint, copaiba, and PanAway. Most of these oils naturally contain menthol, which feels cool and refreshing instead of painful. They’re also anti-inflammatory, allowing the muscles to relax and recover, just like ibuprofen would. Add some coconut oil to dilute it a little and make it creamy, and voila! You have yourself a cream that will soothe those hard working muscles! After working out that day, I usually apply it before bed so it can work its magic overnight, and by morning, my body is ready for more!

Wondering where you can get the ingredients? I bought the mason jar and coconut oil from Target, and the essential oils come from Young Living!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup coconut oil
  • 15 drops PanAway essential oil blend
  • 15 drops Peppermint essential oil
  • 15 drops Copaiba essential oil
  • 15 drops Wintergreen essential oil
  1. There’s just one step- while the coconut oil is liquid (you can heat it a little to melt it), mix it with the essential oils in a mason jar. Throw in the fridge for a couple minutes before use to make it even more cooling and relaxing!
